Bahrain gets tough with Shia activists

I have not blogged much about Bahrain’s crackdown on protestors. This was due to the fact that some things about the Bahrain protests were pretty obvious. Bahrain is ruled by Muslims who belong to the Sunni sect. This was the same set up in Iraq when Saddam Hussein was in charge. Bahrain is backed by Saudi Arabia, where the Sunni are also in charge. The Shia, on the other hand are backed by Iran.

This story from the BBC states that several Bahrain activists have been tried and sentenced with terms ranging from 1 year to life (some of the activists were sentenced in absentia). The charge was for plotting to overthrow the government.

Personally, I think that the Bahrain rulers probably had it right, that Iran was behind the protests in that country, and that these people, backed by Iran, Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon, were in fact plotting against the government in Bahrain.

Personally, I think that it is correct not to interfere in the inner workings of that country. Everything might not be ideal, but Bahrain has not been the worst Muslim country in the world!!
